Spain Digital Nomad Visa Guide: How Remote Workers Can Live, Work and Learn Spanish in Spain

Thinking about moving to Spain while working remotely? This guide explains the Spain digital nomad visa, the main requirements to keep in mind, and why planning your Spanish learning early can make everyday life in Spain much easier.

The visa for international telework and the residence authorization for international telework are the formal legal names for the route that many people know as Spain’s digital nomad visa. If you are considering a move to Spain without giving up your remote work, this guide explains what to review in 2026, how employee and self-employed cases differ, and where Spanish-language planning may fit into a broader relocation plan.

What is Spain’s international telework route?

This route is aimed at third-country nationals who move to Spain in order to carry out a remote employment or professional activity for companies located outside Spain through information technology, telematic and telecommunications systems.

In plain language, many applicants call it the digital nomad visa. Starting with the legal name is still useful because it makes the actual scope of the route much clearer.

Who may want to review this route carefully?

It is often explored by people who want a real base in Spain while keeping an international remote activity:

  • Remote employees working for a company based outside Spain whose activity can truly be done from a distance.
  • Self-employed professionals with international work and enough documentation to prove the professional relationship.
  • People planning a more stable stay than a tourist visit and who want to organize city choice, accommodation, language study and daily routine.

This is not a guarantee of eligibility. It is an orientation guide to help you decide whether the route deserves a closer review.

Which core requirements should you check first?

Saying “I work online” is not enough. In practice, the route requires a combination of employment, professional, identity and financial evidence.

  • A foreign company or group with real and continuous activity for at least 1 year.
  • A prior relationship of at least 3 months before filing, whether employment-based or professional.
  • Proof that the activity can actually be performed remotely.
  • A qualifying profile through education or professional experience.
  • Criminal-record and identity documentation under the applicable rules.
  • Economic means and the health / Social Security coverage that applies to the case.

It also helps to separate proof of an employment relationship from proof of a professional or commercial relationship, because the documentary logic is not exactly the same.

What is the difference between employees and professionals / freelancers?

This distinction is essential. If the case is based on an employment relationship, the holder may work only for companies located outside Spain.

If the case is based on a professional or self-employed activity, work for a company in Spain is possible only when that Spanish work does not exceed 20% of total professional activity.

That 20% exception does not apply to employees. This is why it is so important to define from the start whether the case is employment-based or professional / commercial.

The qualification standard should also be stated clearly: a recognized university degree or postgraduate qualification, professional training, recognized business-school training or at least 3 years of professional experience.

How should you read the income thresholds, duration and in-Spain filing option?

If you apply from outside Spain, the initial route is the visa for international telework, with a maximum validity of 1 year, unless the work period is shorter.

If you are already in Spain lawfully or entered with that visa, you may apply for the residence authorization for international telework. Its maximum validity is 3 years, unless the work period is shorter, and it may be renewed for 2-year periods if the conditions are still met.

In 2026, the UGE reference is based on an SMI of €1,221 per month. That places the indicative threshold at €2,442 per month for the main applicant, plus €915.75 for the first family member and €305.25 for each additional family member.

These figures depend on the current SMI and should be checked again before filing.

Health coverage and Social Security obligations are related, but they are not the same issue: private insurance alone does not replace a Social Security registration duty.

For employees, registration with Spanish Social Security is the default rule when the work is carried out from Spain. It may be replaced only by a valid imported coverage arrangement where an applicable international agreement exists and the home-country Social Security authority issues the required certificate.

For self-employed activity, the UGE states that registration in RETA is required. Under the current UGE FAQs, that duty is not replaced by imported coverage under a bilateral agreement.

Depending on the case and filing route, public health coverage or equivalent private insurance may also be relevant. That can help satisfy the health-coverage requirement, but it does not by itself cancel a Social Security obligation.

Which documents should you review, and what may vary by consulate?

It helps to separate general legal requirements from consular practice.

  • General requirements: passport, company or group, prior relationship, remote-work capability, qualification, criminal records, economic means and health / Social Security coverage.
  • Consular practice: appointment system, legalization or apostille, translations, filing format, instrumental NIE handling and local procedural details.

On criminal records, the general framework points to no criminal record in Spain and in the countries of residence during the last 2 years, together with the corresponding responsible declaration covering the last 5 years.

It is better not to present the NIE as a universal prior legal requirement in every case. If your consular district follows a specific process, you should confirm it with the competent consular office.
